Stakeholder Communication
Stakeholder communication is the skill of getting a decision made by people who did not read the context. It is assessed on whether the ask is clear, the trade-off is honest, and the message survives being forwarded without you attached to it.

What is stakeholder communication?
This covers writing for a specific audience, leading with the decision needed, presenting trade-offs honestly including the inconvenient ones, and delivering bad news in a way that preserves both trust and momentum.
Good work dies in bad communication constantly. This skill is what turns individual capability into organisational outcome, and it is almost never assessed in hiring beyond a vague 'good communicator' box.
What do the levels of stakeholder communication mean?
Four levels, each defined by observable behaviour rather than by years. This is the definition employers set their bar against, and the one every proof is scored to.
- L1Aware
Communicates status clearly and keeps people informed.
Evidence: Written updates that colleagues understand.
- L2Working
Adjusts message and detail to the audience, and makes the ask explicit.
Evidence: An update that got a decision made without a follow-up meeting.
- L3Independent
Leads with the decision needed, states trade-offs honestly including the unwelcome ones, and delivers bad news without losing trust.
Evidence: A written escalation of a real problem that led to an agreed decision.
- L4Leading
Shapes how an organisation communicates and is trusted to carry the hardest messages.
Evidence: Communication standards or narratives adopted organisation-wide.

How is stakeholder communication assessed?
Candidates write a short update on a project that has gone wrong, addressed to an executive. Scoring rewards leading with the decision required, honesty about the bad part, and a message that works without the writer present to explain it.

How do you prove stakeholder communication?
You have capacity for two of five things. Decide, and tell the person who loses.
One vague request, one Slack thread of contradictions. Produce a spec a team can build without you.
Stakeholder Communication: questions people ask
- Is this assessed on writing style?
- No. Style and polish are not scored. Clarity of the ask, honesty of the trade-off, and whether the message stands alone are scored.
- English isn't my first language. Am I disadvantaged?
- The rubric explicitly excludes grammar and fluency. It scores structure and honesty. Reviewers are instructed to ignore language surface entirely.
- Why is this a separate skill?
- Because it is the most frequent difference between two candidates with identical technical proofs, and 'good communicator' on a CV carries no information at all.
